Government to promote soil purification in mining areas using native plants'자생생물 이용한 광산지역 토양환경 개선 추진'

[The Hwankyung Ilbo] The National Institute of Biological Resources (NIBR) affiliated with the Ministry of Environment said it will sign an agreement with the Mine Reclamation Corp. (MIRECO) on May 8 to restore the natural environment, including research on improving soil environment using native plants and pushing for pilot projects.

The two organizations plan to examine plants and microbes in the mine area and jointly carry out pilot projects to improve the soil environment using biological methods by discovering species with superior soil environmental improvement effects.

According to the agreement, the NIBR will be responsible for exploring species that have heavy metal resistance and reduction effects in the mining area and promoting soil environment research and restoration projects by finding useful species.

The MIRECO will work with the NIBR to observe (monitor) sites for soil restoration projects using biological species and follow-up management.

The government plans to expand research projects to improve the efficiency of soil purification by implementing pilot projects to improve soil quality in mining areas in a biological way.
