[The Hwankyung Ilbo] The Ministry of Environment announced that it will establish a Digital Forensics Center of the Ministry of Environment to respond to environmental crimes that are becoming increasingly intelligent.

Digital forensics is a scientific investigation technique that finds criminal clues by analyzing various digital information left on various storage media such as computer, mobile phone or the Internet.

However, since the revision of the Criminal Procedure Act in October 2016, digital forensic data based on scientific analysis results have been recognized as major evidence. Since then, digital forensics has emerged as an important investigative technique for environmental crimes.

Environment Special Judicial Police in the Ministry of Environment is also engaged in scientific investigation activities by restoring and extracting deleted data from various digital devices used in environmental crimes.

Environment Special Judicial Police expects to gain momentum in investigating intelligent environmental crimes as the ministry's Digital Forensics Center will open.

“We plan to actively apply scientific investigation techniques such as digital forensics to socially sensitive environmental pollutants such as fine dust, waste and harmful chemicals to secure decisive evidence to strengthen punishment,” an official from the Ministry of Environment said.
