Disclosure of information on radon of public housing to be mandatory'공공임대주택 라돈 정보 공개 의무화 추진'

[The Hwankyung Ilbo] Rep. Song Ok-joo of the Democratic Party of Korea made a proposal on the revision of the Special Act on Public Housing to guarantee residents of public rental housing rights to know the result of indoor air quality measurement.

Radon is a hazardous substance and primary carcinogen identified by the World Health Organization (WHO).

Although residents are filing complaints after a recent discovery of radon that exceeded the standard level at apartments built by large construction companies, there is no clear solution.

The current Indoor Air Quality Control Act requires indoor air quality such as radon concentration to be reported to the residents, but it is obligatory only for new buildings approved for business after January 1, 2018, only at the time of first occupancy.

The proposed revision requires operators to notify tenants of the results of indoor air quality measurement and impose a fine of 3 million won if they fail to comply.

“If we guarantee the right of residents to know indoor air quality starting from public housing, we can expect the spread of policies to the private sector,” Rep. Song Ok-joo said.
