[The Hwankyung Ilbo] The ratio of diesel-powered cars operated by the government and public organizations is much higher than that of private and commercial vehicles.

According to the data submitted to Rep. Shin Chang-hyun of the Democratic Party of Korea from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, 23,297,688 cars were registered in South Korea as of the end of February 2019, of which 42.8% or 9,975,645 cars were diesel-powered vehicles.

Of the 21,621,574 cars registered as private cars, 9,167,067 cars or 42.4% are diesel cars. And of the 1,586,312 cars registered as commercial vehicles, 749,251 cars or 47.2% are diesel ones.

Out of 89,802 official vehicles operated by the government and public organizations, the number of diesel-fueled vehicles was 59,327, and the ratio was 66.1%.

“The public sector needs stricter standards than the private sector as the government is pushing to reduce diesel cars with the goal of zeroing in diesel cars at public organizations in 2030,” said Rep. Shin Chang-hyun. “The government should take the initiative with budget support for mandatory purchase of eco-friendly vehicles in public institutions and early scrapping of old diesel cars.”
