[The Hwankyung Ilbo] Total electricity consumption in South Korea in 2018 was 526,149 GWh, an increase of 3.6% compared to the previous year.

Gyeonggi Province used the largest amount of electricity among metropolitan municipalities, using 126,296 GWh, which is 23.3% of the national consumption, followed by South Chungcheong Province (9.9%), Seoul (9.1%), North Gyeongsang Province (8.7%), South Gyeongsang Province (6.7%), South Jeolla Province (6.5%), and Ulsan (6.4%).

Electricity production in 2017 was 553,530 GWh. The region that produced the largest electricity was South Chungcheong Province, which produced 131,897 GWh, or 23.8%of the nation's electricity generation, followed by North Gyeongsang Province (15.2%), South Jeolla Province (11.9%), Incheon (11.3%), Gyeonggi Province (11.2%) and South Gyeongsang Province (10.0%).

Electricity self-reliance ratio (power production/power consumption) of South Chungcheong Province is 262.86%, Incheon 255.19%, South Jeolla Province 196.80%, North Gyeongsang 185.02%, and South Gyeongsang 160.38%. Seoul has 1.82% of electricity self-reliance ratio.

The reason for the difference in power generation areas and consumption areas is that areas where power plants are concentrated are mainly supplying power to the metropolitan area as shown in the case of South Chungcheong Province.

As of 2018, the capital area including Seoul and Gyeonggi Province used 32.4% of total domestic power consumption.
