[The Hwankyung Ilbo] The Ministry of Environment refuted some of the claims that diesel cars would be advantageous because greenhouse gases are produced less than gasoline cars although diesel cars emit more fine dust than gasoline cars and that artificial reduction of diesel cars would be difficult given the difference in oil prices.

According to the Ministry of Environment, diesel vehicles are the most harmful in terms of environment and health given the air pollutants and greenhouse gases they emit compared to gasoline vehicles. The emissions of diesel vehicles account for the highest percentage (22%) of fine dust sources in the Seoul metropolitan area as of 2015.

Comparing environmental damage costs (Won/liter) by oil species, it was found that diesel cars 1126 > gasoline 601> LPG 246.

In particular, road test results on nitrogen oxide, which causes the secondary generation of fine dust, showed that diesel cars (0.560g/km) emit 28 times more than gasoline cars (0.020g/km).

“Considering changes in the global market environment, we are actively promoting the reduction of diesel vehicles including old cars to protect the public health by reducing fine dust around the living environment,” said the Ministry of Environment.
