[The Hwankyung Ilbo] The Ministry of Environment announced that a revised bill on the Enforcement Rules of the Clean Air Conservation Act that establishes the emission standard of diesel-powered railway vehicles will be announced for 40 days from January 10.

When the enforcement rules are amended, new diesel railway vehicles manufactured and imported must comply with the new emission standard.

A total of 348 diesel-powered rail vehicles are operating in Korea as of January this year on non-railroad where electric railway vehicles cannot travel.

The average annual emission amount (PM2.5) of a domestic diesel-powered train is about 3,400 kilograms and the average annual emission of a domestic diesel cars (PM2.5) is about 4 kilograms.

If the new standards are applied, it is estimated that the fine dust of 1,200 kg per vehicle (about 300 light vehicles) can be reduced annually.

“The government is making efforts to reduce fine dusts by establishing emission standards for railway vehicles,” said an official from the Ministry of Environment. “The government will further strengthen the management of fine dust emission sources such as construction machinery and ships.”
