[The Hwankyung Ilbo] According to a survey conducted by the GyeongGi, Korea Federation for Environmental Movements(GGKFEM) in 10 regions within Gyeonggi-do using the nitrogen dioxide(NO₂) passive samplers, most regions exceeded the daily standard (40 ppb) recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO).

Highest-rated areas were Sungna-si, Osan-si, Anyang-si, and Ansan-si, which exceeded 50ppb.

The average of 60 points in September and October were 25.3ppb and 37.9ppb, respectively. The total average value of 120 points, including both September and October, was found to be around 31.6 ppb.

The air pollutant, NO₂, is mainly caused by automobile emissions such as diesel vehicles and is related to fine dust (PM-2.5). Exposure to high concentrations of NO₂can lead to chronic bronchitis, pneumonia, pulmonary hemorrhage and pulmonary edema.

GGKFEM said “Gyeonggi-do should set up measures to reduce pollution in the dense areas such as comprehensive investigation and investigation of cause of pollution around school, and preparation of pollution map.”
