[The Hwankyung Ilbo] The Greenhouse Gas Inventory and Research Center under the Ministry of Environment announced that the total greenhouse gas emissions of Korea in 2016 were set at 694.1 million tons, an increase of 0.2% from the previous year.

Energy accounts for 87.1% of the national greenhouse gas emissions by sector and followed by 7.4% of industrial process, 3.1% of agriculture and 2.4% of waste.

Emissions from the energy field, such as petroleum refineries, households, road transport, and chemicals have increased significantly due to low oil prices and cold winter weather.

Total greenhouse gas emissions in Korea peaked at 696.7 million tons in 2013, then dropped to 690.9 million tons in 2014, and then have slightly increased from 2015.

“Although the increase in greenhouse gas emissions has slowed since 2013, national efforts are needed to achieve the goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions, because there is a possibility that emissions will increase again after 2017 due to the heat wave and increase in coal generation,” said an official from the Greenhouse Gas Inventory and Research Center
