[The Hwankyung Ilbo] According to an analysis of the cause of high concentration fine dust (PM2.5) that has appeared from July 10 in Busan and Ulsan area, the National Institute of Environmental Research found out that secondary fine dust generation due to photochemical reaction occurred at the atmospheric stagnation condition caused by the local circulation (land and sea breeze).

Looking at the average concentration of find dust (PM2.5) in July 2018, the concentration of fine dust is higher in Ulsan and Busan than in other regions since July 10.

In July 13 ~ 19, when the daily average concentration of fine dust (PM2.5) in Busan ​​and Ulsan was high, local circulation (sea breeze, etc.) occurred in the North Pacific anticyclone, causing atmospheric congestion in the southeastern part of Yeongnam.

In addition, the generation of secondary fine dust by the photochemical reaction was actively occurred in the high pressure and high temperature (above 30 ℃). Especially, more than 80% of the fine dust concentration was domestically affected.

Even in the summer when the fine dust concentration is the lowest in the whole year, atmospheric stagnation, photochemical reaction and discharge conditions are formed at the same time, high concentration of fine dust can be generated and lasted.

The Ministry of Environment will urgently hold a meeting with Busan, Ulsan, Gyeongsangnam-do, the National Institute of Environmental Research, and the Korea Environment Corporation (July 23) and set up joint special inspections and countermeasures for discharge sites surveyed to have high concentrations of fine dust.
