[The Hwankyung Ilbo] The quality of freshwater lakes in reclaimed land has deteriorated rapidly every year, but no water quality improvement projects have been carried out to address them.

According to the data submitted to Rep. Park Wan-joo of the Democratic Party of Korea from the Korea Rural Community Corporation ahead of the 2019 parliamentary inspection of the administration, 11 out of 22 freshwater lakes subject to water quality measurement were found to have exceeded the standard grade of four.

The ratio of freshwater lakes, which exceeded the fourth grade in water quality, rose sharply from 18.2% in 2014, 27.3% in 2015, and 31.8% in 2016 to 45.6% last year.

According to the Korea Rural Community Corporation, the main source of pollution in nine out of 11 locations that exceeded the water standards in last year's survey was the living and livestock in two.

“With the water pollution in the freshwater lake accelerating, it is urgent to take measures to prevent pollution of freshwater lakes, which currently are the fourth grade in the water quality standard,” said Rep. Park.
