Ministry of Food and Drug Safety to strengthen the safety inspections for imported foods'수입식품 안전검사 강화'

[The Hwankyung Ilbo] The Ministry of Food and Drug Safety said it will double the number of safety inspections for imported foods that have a history of radiation detected and returned from August 23, considering the risks to public health.

Since the Fukushima nuclear accident in 2011, the government has banned imports of 8 Japanese marine products and 27 agricultural products, while other Japanese food products are subject to detailed radiation (cesium and iodine) inspections on every import.

If a trace amount of radioactivity is detected (e.g., 1Bq/kg) as a result of the test, 17 other nuclear test certificates, including plutonium, are required to be submitted, and all of them are returned.

Items subject to strengthened inspection include 17 items from Japan, 10 processed foods, 3 agricultural products, 2 food additives and 2 health function foods.
