[The Hwankyung Ilbo] The Ministry of Environment unveiled the results of its assessment of the 'heat risk' between 2021 and 2030 in five stages (very high – high – normal – low – very low) using the Korea Meteorological Administration's climate forecast scenario targeting 229 local governments..
According to the analysis of the Korea Meteorological Administration's climate forecast scenario, Korea's heat wave risk from 2021-2030 is expected to increase significantly compared to the base year (2001-2010).
The number of areas that heat risk is ‘very high’ is expected to increase from 19 to 48, ‘high’ areas from 50 to 78, while the number of areas that heat risk is ‘low’ is expected to decrease from 64 to 32, ‘very low’ areas from 16 to 6.
In response, the Ministry of Environment launched a heat wave response support group on July 10 to minimize heat damage, which is expected to become routine and more serious, and is responding by promoting short-term support to enhance the local governments' ability to cope with heat waves and help the sensitive groups cope with the heat wave well.
